Whether it be by providing up to the minute content for DNBTV, PHILLY DNB or keeping up his company DIGITAL FOX STUDIOS Gray can be unreachable at times, but for good reason. Read on as we drop a "Take 5" on him and don't forget to check out some of the heavy Drum and Bass mixes on his site as well.

1. Is Drum & Bass dead, dying or thriving?

Ah, the dreaded question!!! I've been in the scene for well over 10 years now so I've been able to see things in their prime as well as at their lowest point. And since I grew up in the Philadelphia scene, I've seen the highest of the high. Hell, I got to see Dieselboy on a weekly basis plus 1-2 UK headliners for $7 bucks! But then again, that was 2002.

The Drum & Bass scene is an ever changing flux. There are gonna be high points and low point through out it's life span. I think the real question is just that. Can Drum & Bass stand the test of time? I personally feel that the music as a whole is more diverse and dynamic then many of genre's. The level of production value has risen with the evolution of technology but for some reason, there has been a major lapse in overall support in the community. Why? Not really sure.

I know from a personal point our local scene here was one of the strongest in the US for many years but as time passed, the amount of under 21 parties started to fade away. I keep saying this to people when talking about this situation, "If someone has to wait till their 21 to start getting into Drum & Bass, they are gonna have a harder time accepting it". I guess I'm putting a lot of stock in under age kids being overly impressionable and taking a chance on something new oppose to someone who's fairly set into what he/she likes. The lack of a new generation is what I like to call it. I know when I first got into Drum & Bass there was a 'clique' of established party goers & dj's that brought knowledge to us younger folk (Jason Magin & Armen were my mentors here in Philly) and made sure that we appreciate what we've missed and to take in everything that was in store for us. They would lay a foundation for us to follow to help improve the scene and make it grow. But as of right now, it seems that my generation doesn't have a group behind us teach and pass down the information that we were taught.

With no younger generation coming into play to carry on and follow in our footsteps, things have gotten to a point where they are now. Events are dropping left and right, highly established parties are calling it quits all over the US. I recently flew down to Atlanta to catch and Evol Intent Live show and my god, that party alone restored my faith in the US. Thousands of people all having a great time, signing along, drinking and just flat out enjoying the time. It's how things were. Not about what dj played what dub or other shit like that. It was about alot of people having fun with each other with the music they loved. And from the looks of it, that same vibe is coming back! There is a new monthly event here in Philly that is bringing back the good times. It's called Bedlam (http://www.phillydnb.com for more info) and it's about seeing great talent, getting sloppy drunk, dancing with girls and so on. And I'm taking notice that alot of other cities are doing that. Atlanta, Boston, Seattle...really trying to bring that flavor back that made this genre so damn appealing.

So long story short, the scene was dying slowly for a couple years but it seems that it's back on the rise and I can't be happier. Bring it the fuck on!

Yikes, I really took that question and just ran with it, didn't I? LOL!

2. What's in store for DNBTV?

It's been a long year so far...and it's only August, lol. It's been tough for all of us at DnBTv recently due to alot of people that run it having a lot of personal situations that needed to be handled. From having children, to finishing school and moving, so many things have come up this year that have held us back from taking that next step with our site. Luckily we have a strong fan base and dj line that keeps us going. Sure we don't have the radio listener numbers that a Bassdrive has, but then again, no one does, lol. But we still like to think that we have way more to offer then almost any other site out there. I would think that D&B Arena would be our only true competition.

But as for what's in store, we have a lot of things planned! We just went out and purchased some new hardware (servers baby!) and are currently locking down some new interviews and video sets! You know, all the good shit we're known for, lol. We've been kicked in the balls with some many technical issues recently that it's gonna be good to have all new WORKING equipment that will allow us to bring nothing but fresh new content on a more consistent basis. Also we now have our very own DnBTv Podcast! If you are on iTunes you can subscribe today and instantly have access to a great set of videos, interviews and exclusive studio mixes! We're so late to the podcast party but god damn it we're here!

3. Would you ever play Trance music live in a clown suit while eating a hot dog?

Are you serious? Like, com'on...seriously? No...for real? Like, all I can say is that I'm worried that some is spying on me cause I did this last Tuesday and I thought it was just me, the goat and the tranny that were in the room. Wait, do you know the goat? Did he fucking rat me out? I swear to go I'll fucking slit tha......................

...uh, moving on. o_O

4. It's 4 AM in Philly. Where is the best spot to eat.

So like, the entire Philadelphia area is gonna keel over and moan when they read this but...JIM'S MOTHER FUCKIN STEAKS SON! That is my cheese steak spot of choice next to the world famous Tony Luke's but that's a bit out of the way when you're at the clubs or on South Street. Everyone that comes to Philly I take the Jim's and every time I tell someone from Philly that I took the guest to Jim's, they just say "Why?". I don't know, I think it's one of those things that people around here have had it sooooo much, that they just don't like it anymore. But not me. I can live off this shit. I've taken guys like Evol Intent, Ewun, Gein as well Mr. Phrenik and all have had rave reviews.

Man, I'm hungry now. :-(

5. Current top 5?

It's been a pretty fucking good year for DnB, imo. Here are the top 5 that are always being played:

1. Kemal - "Hostile" (Lords Of Dong Remix)
2. Evol Intent - "Take That" (Ewun & Mental Sharp Remix)
3. Mason & Noah D - "The Product"
4. Apex - "Hench"
5. Geier - "Solar" (Misha Remix)

Soulidify - A Freestyle Mix Part 2

Hello Everyone!

Here is a brand new freestyle mix for your listening pleasure. Jeremy was nice enough to man handle a "Take 5" session for us and here it is.

1. What's good in Sinistarr's hood as of late?

Well a lot of good things in store... My 12" on Influence Records (Nixed/Leeroy Jenkins) just released last week, and I just wrapped up my digital EP with Sonorous Music. I also have more wax dropping in December -- with the LONG awaited tune "Lynx is Playing At My House" and "Park Avenue/My Thoughts Exactly", both forthcoming on Horizons Music. I have been working hard in the studio, with many different tunes, and collabs with big names like Eveson, Mixmaster Doc, and Redeyes, and up and coming names, such as JJ, Dave Owen, and Syntex. I've been working equally as hard behind the scenes with Peer Pressure Recordings, getting ready for the new year ahead of us -- expect a lot of big things in store.

2. Techno or electro?

BOTH. When you are from Detroit, it's not the same electro that is popular in the West or in other places. If anyone is interested, listen to names like Aux 88, Underground Resistance, Interdimensional Transmissions, and DJ Stingray - That's REAL, worldwide electro. :) As for Techno - i live and breathe it. 'Nuff Said.

3. What influences your production?

See above...Other than that, a lot of words and interactions with people and places, and a lot of other music from the 90s. I listened to the radio as a kid - and a LOT of it.

4. Is Drum and Bass dead?

Not at all... I feel drum & bass is at a very transitional stage. There's a lot of exciting producers and DJs at the forefront, along with the labels tthat give them an outlet to publish their works. I'm excited to be a part of that movement, and will continue to push new music constantly.

5. Top 5 tracks at the moment?

Zero T ft. Steo - Refusal (Calibre Remix) (Integral Dub)
Chris Inperspective - Faith (Mjazz)
Metro - Metro (dub)
Drumagick - So Far Away (Forthcoming Innergorund)
Facing Jinx - Ready (Peer Pressure Recordings)

Drum & Bass TV

Sinistarr Podcast

Tracklisting:

01. Random Movement - Dancing With Devils - Peer Pressure Recordings
02. Bungle - Unknown - Sonorous Music
03. Calibre - Roundhouse - Signature
04. Eveson - Touch - 31 Records dub
05. Icicle & Switch - Do I Move You - Lucky Devil Music
06. Sinistarr - My Thoughts Exactly - Inside Recordings
07. Dave Owen - Skinny Dip - Dub
08. Sabre - Riverside - Lucky Devil Music
09. The Insiders - Changes - Dub
10. Mutt - GED - Audio Decay
11. Sinistarr - How We Do - Peer Pressure Recordings
12. Dave Owen - Skinz - Peer Pressure Recordings
13. Tyler Straub & Stunna - We Got Burlingame - Dub
14. Chris Inperspective - Faith - MJazz
15. Soul Intent - Sax Me - Influence Records Dub
16. Mixmaster Doc - Trip - 31 Records
17. Survival - Out The Door - Horizons Music
18. Chris Inperspective - Wonderlust - Dub
19. Camp Lo - Luchini (Twilight Sentinels Remix) - Dub

Update 11-24-08

Yes, I am back on the blog again with a ton of new material and projects from your friends at Peer Pressure. Taking some time to recharge is essential in moving forward. That being said here is a quick "Take 5" session with the man... dun dun dun... Genr8! One of the hardest working producers in the music business and one heck of a guy =) Give a quick read and don't forget to download the exclusive mix he dropped for DNBTV.com .

What's your take on the jumping of genres from drum and bass producers?

It’s arguably the best career move to do for any one with production chops in general. At this day and age its suicide to piguen-hole yourself to just one genre. And if you just do it for fun I think it’s a good way to step back and get a new perspective on your hobby.

Is drum and bass dead?

Perceiving anything as “dead” is relative. It might seem so at times to those of us that no longer have the nuance of hearing it for the first time. But as long as there are young new heads being exposed to it and adopting it as their new anthem it’s not going anywhere. In fact those are the people that inspire me to make music. That sord of simbiotic relationship between the listener and the artist is fueling soo many talented artists recording right now. Even if everyone stopped making it all together today, we’d have years of quality recorded tunes to listen to from all over the globe.

What music excites you these days?

Good music is good music. Any song that is done with vision and soul along with proper execution will get my juju.

Please tell us what's instore musically for Genr8 in the near future.

House, grime, and dubstep. I’ve gotten inspiration lately from noticing dnb techniques being heard all over the place now. I feel like I can freely apply different angles to other genres and not sound out of place in a radio dj set persay.

Current top 5.

Rawtee - Stand Up

Cartel – Machines

Drum People – Her Name is

ThinkTank - SpaceRobotMan

12th Planet – Control Skreamix

Update

Hello Everyone!

Just dropping a quick note to say that we have several interviews, (take 5's) coming up this week. Building on some floating atmosphere and a classic break, “Ready” is bound to be the intro to your backyard feasts! Leading into the moving drop, the track lets you teases us with the driving force in this tune: a slow, moody piano loop that, once dropped atop the break and a funky, muted bass, works wonders and begs you to move!

B - I Know - PPRDINTL004

On “I Know”, a seductive set of vocal samples sex up the infectious stabs atop an understated sub. This is one of those deeper cuts, something that will breeze easily into the mix, and you won’t even notice how fresh it is until its halfway through, making you wheel it and take it all in again. Dropping some warm vibes over the cut, with the strings overtop, brings you into a zone not too far off from the feelings you get watching a sunset on a warm summer night, peering over the beachfront, reminiscing on days past.

B - Without You - PPRDINTL003

Keeping that soul alive, “Without You” is the letter you write to that love that you lost in those memories of days gone by. Realizing that you may have messed up or somehow caused the breakup, “Without You” is the lament on a relationship lost. Many DnB cuts can make you dance, but these two tracks from Simplification make you get those real emotions flowing. Having what so many producers lack (soul) is going to keep this duo around for a while…

You may purchase our digital tunes from any of the fine shops listed below.

Regards,

The Peer Pressure Family

dRamatic - "Pressure" / "Moving Close" - PPRDINTL002

dRamatic - "Pressure" / "Moving Close" - Peer Pressure

A - Pressure - PPRDINTL002

It wasn’t just enough that dRamatic had to come with a catchy intro, all uplifting and piano-drenched. No, we have to then be treated to a twist in how you’d imagine the tune would progress – you’d assume this would just delve into the normal, soft soul, but dRamatic comes correct with a heavier drum and really bright bass, screaming “get on the floor and dance”! An ascending, fuzzy loop is paired with some airy synths and piano flourishes, meeting up with the perfectly-placed bassline in holy matrimony. This is one of those choice tracks that end up becoming anthems in certain circles, playing that familiar melody that instantly gets crowds groovin’! “Deep In My Heart” finds dirrrtyB creating a deeper cut to sink your teeth into, and actually flip the script.

B - Deep In My Heart - PPRDINTL001

While the former’s melody seems to rise, “Deep In My Heart” has a funky dip to it, playing well with the synths and distant drone of the strings. The drums knock, but don’t sound as sterile and vapid as many DnB producers come with these days, which is totally refreshing, and adds to the mysteries embedded deep within this one. And with this being Peer Pressure’s first foray into international producers, one can only hope that this trend continues.

You may purchase our digital tunes from any of the fine shops listed below.

Regards,

The Peer Pressure Family

KellyDean - "Backyard Boogie" / "Choices" - PPRD005

KellyDean - "Backyard Boogie" / "Choices" - Peer Pressure

A - Backyard Boogie - PPRD005

With “Backyard Boogie”, KellyDean does not knock politely on the door, waiting for an answer: KellyDean straight kicks the door down, making you understand that NOW is the time. Hyper, old school breaks run rampant, while a disgustingly fat bassline both creates a bed that hovers underneath the beat, but also has a second part that slides itself into the groove at will. Add atop of that varying loops, vocal samples and other effects, and this track goes from the backyard porch jams to outer space at will.

B - Choices - PPRD005

On “Choices”, KellyDean actually takes us on an outer-limits journey, using this track as a sonic ship that takes you on a guided tour throughout deepest, darkest space. All of the sudden, an instantly catchy bassline melody is dropping, bringing in some bright, flexible funk to your normal drab and dull mixes. Tracks like these are ones to grow on, as they showcase, within a shell you are comfortable with, that interesting music is still to be experienced in this thing of ours.

B - Strength (vip) - PPRD004

For an added bonus, Magnafide brings in some harder, crisp drums to the VIP of “Strength”, still captivating crowds with those superb melodies, but dropping a rugged sheen over top so the vibes will translate for those sets looking for more of an edge while still maintaining an uplifting feel. WMD’s for the dancefloor, and beyond.

You may purchase our digital tunes from any of the fine shops listed below.

Regards,

The Peer Pressure Family

Doppler - "Silent Drops" / "Shallow Water" - PPRD003

Doppler - "Silent Drops" / "Shallow Water" - Peer Pressure

A - Silent Drops - PPRD003

Back almost a decade ago, there were those tunes that would slowly creep up into the mix, with that effective loop, usually something that was very simple and powerful, that you would instantly commit to memory, so you could bug your peers about who crafted such a gem. Doppler’s “Shallow Water” does just this, drawing the listener in with a sly, eye-wink of a loop, accented by some punchy horns and hard drums. With the evolving horns in this cut, one could almost see a robotic, funked out Drum & Bass band playing this one live on stage.

B - Shallow Water - PPRD003

On the flip, Doppler keeps the flavors fresh with some interesting flute work riding over a cavalcade of sounds that include a sung female vocal, some echoed piano stabs, quick-played strings and a bevy of other found sounds. File under Drum & Bass, and everything but the kitchen sink. This is entirely not so when Phrantek steps into the arena, and “Aeneid” is the perfect example. He takes what you would assume would just be another turbo-charged neuro grime-fest and infuses some hypnotic guitar twinkles, taking the best from both sides (hard, precision cut drums alongside melodies that pluck at your heart-strings) and creates a two-headed monster, just itching to unleash it’s fury on unsuspecting ears.

B - Persona & Shadow - PPRD002

Following this up is the sneak attack that is “Persona & Shadow”; while one definitely can feel the tension and anticipation rising with that chorus of bleeps and blips in the intro, once that bassline drops, you will be begging to have it pulled back so you can relive that again. Drop this alongside any of your favorite jams, and make some magic.

You may purchase our digital tunes from any of the fine shops listed below.

Regards,

The Peer Pressure Family

Sinistarr - "Scare Do" / "How We Do" - PPRD001

Sinistarr - "Scare Do" / "How We Do" - Peer Pressure Recordings

A - Scare Do - PPRD001

Representing Detroit, Michigan, Sinistarr comes correct for the debut release on Peer Pressure Recordings. “Scare Do” brings the minimal Soul to the mix, dropping some of that Detroit flavor alongside some funky keys and a vocal sample that calls you over, then ducks behind the bass again. This one packs a smooth punch, bringing through some playful, ‘get the party started right’ vibes.

B - How We Do - PPRD001

“How We Do” takes a deeper approach to the same theme, looping some instant-head nod inducing flare, and pairing it alongside some classic call-and-response Hip-Hop chants, dropping into a steady crowd pleaser. It’s amazing how two tracks can tell two different sides of the same story. It’s almost like looking at a movie from another character’s perspective… and the story giving you that warm, stellar feel.
